Our Approach to Privacy
DCCannabis.org is an educational site about cannabis in Washington, DC. We believe that visitors seeking cannabis information — whether for personal decisions, travel planning, policy research, or journalistic purposes — deserve strong privacy protections. Given the ongoing federal prohibition of cannabis and the 29% of DC that remains under federal jurisdiction, we have designed this site to collect as little data as technically possible.
What We Collect
Cookies (Two)
We set a single cookie (dccannabis_age_verified) when you confirm you are 21 or older. This cookie lasts 30 days and prevents the age gate from appearing on every visit.
We also set a cookie consent acknowledgment cookie (dccannabis_cookie_consent) when you dismiss the cookie notice. This lasts one year.
Server Logs
Like all websites, our web server automatically logs basic request information (IP address, page visited, browser type, timestamp). These logs are used solely for security monitoring and technical troubleshooting. They are not analyzed for user behavior, shared with third parties, or used for any purpose beyond site operations.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not use Google Analytics or any third-party analytics platform
- We do not use tracking pixels, fingerprinting, or retargeting technologies
- We do not sell, share, trade, or monetize any visitor data
- We do not collect email addresses, names, or personally identifiable information
- We do not serve advertisements of any kind
- We do not use social media tracking widgets or embed social media content
- We do not build user profiles or track visitors across sessions
Third-Party Resources
We load the following resources from third-party content delivery networks for site functionality and appearance:
- Bootstrap CSS/JS from cdn.jsdelivr.net
- Bootstrap Icons from cdn.jsdelivr.net
- Google Fonts from fonts.googleapis.com
These services may log standard HTTP request information per their own privacy policies. No user data is transmitted to these services beyond what is inherent in an HTTP request (IP address, browser user-agent, referring page). We chose CDN-hosted assets for performance and reliability.
Data Retention
We do not maintain any user database. Server logs are retained for a limited period for security purposes and then deleted. The age-verification cookie expires after 30 days. The cookie consent cookie expires after one year. No other persistent data is stored about visitors.
Children’s Privacy
DCCannabis.org is intended exclusively for adults aged 21 and older. While the site contains educational content rather than cannabis advocacy, our age-verification gate is designed to restrict access to those who meet the legal age requirement for cannabis in Washington, DC. We do not knowingly collect any information from minors.
Changes to This Policy
If we ever change our privacy practices, we will update this page with a new “last verified” date. We have no plans to add tracking, analytics, or advertising.
